ABSTRACT
This paper examines the governance and implications of school choice within China's compulsory education system, emphasizing the quest for educational equity. By leveraging a qualitative analysis of policy adaptations and their socio-economic impacts, it explores how school choice has evolved as a response to the unequal distribution of educational resources and its effects on social equity. The findings reveal that despite various policy reforms aimed at curbing school choice irregularities, disparities persist, influenced by socio-economic status and regional disparities. The study concludes that while policy measures have managed to regulate school choice to some extent, achieving genuine educational equity requires more comprehensive strategies that address underlying socio-economic disparities.
